Why Choice Feels Different

Built for one patient panel, not a waiting room.

01

One Surgeon, Start to Finish

You see the same orthopedic surgeon at your consultation, your treatment, and every follow-up, so nothing about your case gets lost between visits.

02

Seen This Week, Not Next Quarter

Choice Orthopedics keeps a deliberately small patient panel, so new injuries and urgent concerns get evaluated in days, not months.

03

No Forms, No Guesswork

Tell us what's going on in your own words. We'll ask the follow-up questions and tell you exactly what to do next. No twenty-tab patient portal required.

Meet Dr. Spang

One surgeon. Four things worth knowing.

The Surgeon

Fellowship-trained. Massachusetts-raised.

Dr. Robert C. Spang III, MD is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with fellowship training in shoulder reconstruction and sports medicine. He grew up in Massachusetts, studied molecular and cellular biology at Harvard, and graduated near the top of his class at Columbia University's Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha.

He treats the full range of shoulder, knee, and sports-related conditions, from first-time injuries to complex revision cases, and built Choice Orthopedics to bring that same level of care back to the city where he grew up.

  • Board Certified, American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery
  • Harvard University & Columbia Vagelos College of P&S
  • Inducted, Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society

The Training

Five years at Boston's teaching hospitals, then New York's busiest sports medicine floor.

Dr. Robert C. Spang III is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in shoulder reconstruction and sports medicine. He completed his residency through the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program, where he served as chief resident, followed by a sports medicine and shoulder fellowship at Hospital for Special Surgery.

He has served as an assistant team physician for the New York Giants and New York Red Bulls, caring for athletes at the highest level. He treats shoulder, knee, and sports-related conditions, from common injuries to complex cases.

  • Fellowship, Hospital for Special Surgery, New York
  • Assistant Team Physician, NY Giants & NY Red Bulls

The Care Model

Decisions made together, not handed down.

Every patient at Choice Orthopedics gets real time with their surgeon: enough to review imaging in detail, understand every treatment option, and choose a path forward together.

Dr. Spang treats surgery as one tool among several, favoring conservative and minimally invasive options whenever they can get you back to full strength, and stays deliberate about opioid use at every stage of recovery.

  • Extended visit times, not rushed appointments
  • Non-surgical options explored first
  • Deliberate, opioid-conscious pain management

The Practice

A boutique practice built for Middleton, Massachusetts’ most active patients.

Choice Orthopedics is a solo, independent practice in Middleton, MA, built for athletes, weekend warriors, and anyone who wants an orthopedic surgeon who knows their case by name.

On-site imaging and diagnostics keep most visits to a single stop, and when surgery is the right call, Dr. Spang coordinates care at Middleton’s leading outpatient and hospital surgical facilities, and stays involved through every stage of recovery.

How It Actually Works

What happens when you tell us what's going on.

  1. Tell Us What's Going On

In your own words: what hurts, when it started, what you've already tried. No forms to fill out first.

  2. We Ask What We Need To

A few follow-up questions, insurance, urgency, imaging you already have, so nothing gets missed.

  3. Get a Clear Next Step

An appointment with Dr. Spang, an urgent visit within days, or a direct answer, whichever actually fits your case.

Frequently Asked Questions

Good to know before you call.

What is “What’s going on?”

It’s the fastest way to reach us. Tell us what’s happening in your own words and we’ll tell you the right next step: an appointment, an urgent visit, or a direct answer. No portals, no long intake forms.

Do you accept new patients?

Yes. Join the waitlist and we’ll be in touch within one business day to walk you through next steps and get you scheduled.

How fast can I get an appointment?

You’ll hear back from us within 24 hours of joining the waitlist. From there, we’ll find the earliest available time that works for you.

What insurance do you accept?

We’re in network with most major insurance plans. Contact us to confirm whether yours is accepted before your visit.

Do I need a referral?

No referral is required to reach out to us directly. Some insurance plans do require one for coverage purposes, so it’s worth confirming with your carrier before your visit.

Will I definitely need surgery?

We always start with the least invasive option. Surgery is only recommended when conservative care hasn’t produced results, or when the nature of the injury clearly calls for it. Dr. Spang will walk you through every option before any decision is made.

Where does Dr. Spang perform surgery?

Procedures are performed at a local accredited surgical facility. We’ll share the specific location and everything you need to know once surgery becomes part of your plan.

I already have imaging from another provider. Can I bring it?

Yes, bring whatever you have. CDs, digital files, and printed films are all accepted. Having prior imaging on hand helps Dr. Spang give you a more complete picture from the very first visit.
